Climate change - what price will the next generation pay?

Did you know that a lot of kids worry about climate change? They learn in science class that we humans are burning huge volumes of fossil fuels (oil, coal and gas) and, because of the emission levels, the planet is getting warmer, ice caps are melting and sea levels are rising.

Meet this 9 year old boy, Levi Draheim. He's a bubbly kid with wild curly hair who lives on the coast of Florida, a place threatened by rising seas. Draheim has already noticed that reefs are disappearing, and he’s stopped going to the beach these days because he’s getting nightmares of his house being underwater.

Levi and 20 other kids are currently part of a ground-breaking lawsuit against the US government. They are protesting against President Donald Trump for pulling out of the historic, legally binding agreement that 195 countries have made to regulate carbon emissions (the Paris Climate Agreement). These kids are concerned their generation will inherit an irreparably damaged planet thanks to the short-sighted actions of adults today.

Elsewhere, the effects of climate change have already been serious. In Bangladesh the rising sea levels are damaging infrastructure and pushing thousands of people away from their homes near the rivers and beaches; turning them into climate-refugees. Forced to move to overcrowded cities, the newcomers have no option but to settle into the polluted slums.

Of course, it is not just humans that are struggling to adapt to the change in weather. Scientists fear that over one third of all species on the planet will become extinct in the next three decades.

Most people know climate change is happening, but they push it aside so they can continue living their lives.
— Isaac Vergun, age 15.

It’s time for us adults to make a choice - what kind of planet do we want to leave for future generations? And what choices do we have in our hands to make a positive difference?

The science behind the changing weather

There is overwhelming agreement between scientists all around the world that the current acceleration of global warming is due to human activity - it is not a natural phenomenon.

While it is natural to have greenhouse gases protecting the atmosphere and keeping us warm, the current levels of greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, are so high that the whole planet is warming up far more than it should.

Where is all this extra carbon dioxide coming from? It comes from burning fossil fuels such as oil, gas and coal. We use this to get electricity in our homes and factories, and to travel or transport goods by car, ship or plane. Simply put, we humans are using the wrong fuels.

What will happen if we do nothing?

The early signs of climate change are all around us. Temperatures are getting warmer, giant ice sheets are melting, and the oceans are rising. Flowers are blooming at different times, and birds are not flying as far south as they used to for the winter.

Why does all this matter? If the planet keeps getting warmer we can expect more severe weather such as storms, flooding, droughts and heat waves. These changes can cause further problems like the spread of diseases, wild fires, and food shortages. Historically food insecurity has led to wars between countries. Coral reefs will disappear and many plants and animals will become extinct. In short, climate change is connected to everything!

Why is rise in global temperature causing storms and flooding?

You may be wondering, how does an increase in global temperature cause more extreme rainfall and flooding, as well as droughts? The following chart gives a simplified overview of how increased greenhouse gases impact the climate. Most of the effects are related to water - not surprising when we consider that our planet is 70% water!

What is the urgency behind this?

The maximum global warming that the planet can tolerate is 2 degrees Celcius. There is no debate among leading scientists about this. The insurance industry has also warned that if the world goes beyond a 2 degree temperature increase, it is not systemically insurable due to the frequency and intensity of extreme weather impacts.

This puts a finite limit of how much carbon we can emit in total before we reach this high temperature (3000 Gigatonnes!). This is our entire global “carbon budget” forever, so we have to spend it slowly and carefully.

If we continue emitting as we are, we will use up our carbon budget and cause the planet to reach the 2 degrees Celsius in under 20 years. But if we start to reduce carbon emissions now we can transition safely to a zero net emissions economy by year 2050, without causing more than a 2 degrees rise. That’s why it comes down to our generation to decide.

The Paris Climate Agreement

Governments of 194 nations around the world have made a commitment to make sure the planetary temperature does not increase more than 2 degrees Celsius, and make efforts to limit it to 1.5 degrees. This decision was made in the historic, legally binding agreement called the Paris Climate Agreement, two years ago. In order to achieve this goal, the whole world must transition to a different kind of economy by 2050, with zero net emissions.

Why should we care?

Out of all the living beings affected by the effects of climate change there are three groups that will suffer the most if we do nothing.

Vulnerable beings. These are the people, animals and plants that will suffer from flooding, droughts, crop failures etc. Most of us are able and wealthy enough to move city, find new food sources, and build stronger homes. But what about those who can’t? What will their suffering be like?

Future beings. The result of our actions will be felt most strongly by those living on this planet after we are all long gone. Right now we are seeing the early signs of climate change, but our kids and grandkids will feel the full brunt of it.

Invisible world. Far beyond what we can see or comprehend, the science of Jainism tells us about the innumerable invisible souls that make up the beauty of this planet. There is an invisible interplay of spiritual energy, a cosmic dance of value that cannot be calculated.

For a spiritual seeker, the question of how much we care is simply about the size of our hearts. How much space do we have in our hearts for caring about others?

Let’s move to action

Each of us needs to reduce our use of fossil fuels - direct and indirect. How can we do this? Here are 20 steps that would make a big difference.

1. Be open to change! It won’t help if we ignore the problem, and leave it to others to make changes. Find out what you can do, encourage others, and remain optimistic!

2. Reduce air travel. Reducing just one long-haul flight per annum can significantly reduce our carbon footprint! Consider taking one less family holiday, or go somewhere closer by train. At work, look for alternatives to travelling abroad to meet partners or clients, such as video conferencing.

3. Pat yourself on the back for being a vegetarian and think about going a step further and embracing a vegan lifestyle. This will have a major impact on your carbon footprint. Not only does raising animals for food take a lot of fuel (fertiliser production, clearing of rainforests for pasture land and growing crops to feed the animals, etc), but cows in particular release large amounts of methane which is a powerful greenhouse gas. This is why a lot of environmentalists are vegan.

4. Eat more local produce. Local food has a shorter distance to travel before reaching us, and is probably fresher and healthier for us as well.

5. Smarter home heating. Poorly insulated houses require a lot of energy to heat or cool down. Draught-proofing, insulating, and brick walls can help. Old and inefficient boilers can waste a lot of energy. If a boiler is older than 15 years it may be worth replacing it with a more energy-efficient machine. Old window frames and seals can also be a major source of heat loss.

6. Wear a sweater and keep the door closed. It might sound obvious, but we can keep ourselves warmer with simple actions. With every degree you drop your room temperature you save up to 6% of energy consumption for heating! Don’t heat any more than necessary. 18-20 degrees Celsius is normally enough for a healthy environment, and can be lower in rooms that are not used regularly.

7. Using less Air conditioning. New generations that are growing up with air conditioning are used to it always being on, even when not necessary. It is common to see people wearing sweaters because the AC is too strong! Consider turning down the cooling, opening more windows and encouraging air flow. There are also modern systems for pumping cool air from under the ground.

8. Drive less or go car-free. Reducing the mileage of the average new car from 15,000 to 10,000 miles a year will save more than a tonne of carbon, about 15% of the average person’s footprint. Consider being less dependent on your car.

9. Use more public transport. Buses and rail systems are three times more fuel-efficient than private cars. Alternatively get fitter with walking and cycling. In cities like Amsterdam more than 25% of all trips are made on bicycles!

10. Electric cars. If car travel is vital, think about buying or, even better, leasing an electric vehicle when your existing car comes to the end of its life. A battery car will save you money on fuel, particularly if you drive tens of thousands of miles a year.  Even though the electricity to charge your car will be partly generated in a gas or coal power station, electric cars are far more efficient so total carbon emissions will fall.

11. Making things last longer. It is better to repair your existing car and make it last longer than buying a new car, even if it is electric. The same is true for many other desirable items; the energy needed to make a new computer or phone is many times the amount used to power it over its lifetime. Apple says 80% of the carbon footprint of a new laptop comes from manufacturing and distribution, not use in the home.

12. Switch to LED lighting. Within the last couple of years, LEDs (light-emitting diodes) have become cheap and effective. If you have any energy-guzzling halogen lights in your house – many people have them in kitchens and bathrooms – it makes good financial and carbon sense to replace as many as possible with their LED equivalents. They should last at least 10 years, meaning you avoid the hassle of buying new halogen bulbs every few months.

13. Buy electricity from green providers. In most countries there are electricity providers that source from wind, solar, hydroelectric sources that don’t contribute to carbon emissions. You can also consider putting your own solar panels up. They work effectively even in cold countries like the UK and US.

14. Dry your clothes naturally. Frequent use of a tumble dryer adds a lot to your energy and carbon bill. Consider just air-drying the clothes. Also, while on the subject of laundry - remember that you can turn the temperature down on your clothes washing machine to just 20 or 30 degrees, and your clothes will still come out fresh and clean.

15. Buy less things. Simply buying less “stuff” and consuming less is a powerful route to lower emissions. A new suit may have a carbon impact equivalent to your home’s electricity use for a month. A single T-shirt may have caused emissions equal to two or three days’ typical power consumption. Buying lesser but better quality things has an important role to play.

16. Reduce waste. Food waste rotting in landfills is one of the largest sources of methane - a potent greenhouse gas. Recycling saves carbon emissions associated with manufacturing goods from scratch. Choosing reusables over disposables reduces the quantity of goods that need to be manufactured.

17. Ethical investment portfolio. Many of us don’t realise that a large portion of our savings (personal or business) may be invested in fossil fuel companies, or companies with a terrible track record on pollution. Have a look at your investments, or ask your fund manager if there is an opportunity to back renewable power instead.

18. Encourage politicians to act. Support those who are taking a stand on reducing fossil fuel dependency. In the past green politics were seen as a threat to the economy, but now that is changing to the opposite. Be an environmental voter. We can also support NGO and other advocacy groups that are encouraging positive policy-making.

19. Plant trees. Planting more trees will increase the planet's capacity to absorb carbon dioxide, creating a healthier breathing planet. Find out if you can plant some trees or support a charity that can do it for you. It makes a great birthday gift, or CSR initiative for your company.

20. Organise a movie-night! An excellent and easy way to dive deeper and understand climate change is to watch Leonardo DiCaprio’s film “Before the Flood”. It shows Leonardo’s three-year journey exploring the subject of climate change for free online. Book a movie night with your friends and family to enjoy this 1 hour documentary.

Resolution

Let us take action now to support a living earth, and a stable climate. Starting with our own lifestyles, homes, businesses and governments, let us each consider what power we have in our hands to make changes, inspire others and accelerate the urgent transition needed to a planet-friendly economy.
